The Reason Tree

Problem Management · Root Cause · Error Correction

Stop recurring issues at the root.

The Reason Tree assists teams with taking a principles-first approach to finding root causes and correcting errors. This approach encourages a cross-functional culture of working with, instead of at each other.

A why-tree A recurring incident at the top. Asking why rules out user error, then finds the issue is fixed by hand and never logged, then that the process covers only the fix, and ends at the root cause: the process masks the issue, so its cause is never investigated. SYMPTOM Recurring incidents WHY? User error RULED OUT WHY? Manual fixes, never logged WHY? Process only covers incident fix ROOT CAUSE Process masks issue, cause is never investigated

Our approach

Fast on principles; slow on rules.

Every good rule started as an applied principle. When the context changes, go back to the principle to see whether the rule still holds.

A process that is followed

Asks
Did you complete the steps?
Measures
Who completed what, and how long did it take?
Feels like
One team pushes a process while another carries it. Teams work at each other.

A process that is practiced

Asks
Did we identify and fix what's broken?
Measures
What did we correct, and did we mitigate recurrence?
Feels like
Teams investigate and work the problem together. This is working with each other.

Technology is a multiplier of our current state; strengths and flaws alike. We can help you begin laying the groundwork for cultivating a healthy culture today.

About

Our foundation

The Reason Tree is built on 23 years of experience in technology operations. Beginning his career as a local systems administrator, Darrell progressively rose to an enterprise director. He built incident and problem management programs, coached and led the senior engineers who respond first to major incidents, and designed response strategies that held up in real outages.

He started The Reason Tree to teach what real-world experience taught him: culture suffers where principles are undefined or avoided, fast fixes keep problems alive, and those who bring real data and shared principles get results.
